Employment:  Support Worker I

 

Forward House regularly hires for Direct Support Professional positions including regularly scheduled part-time and casual hours. Applicants should note that shifts may include weekends and holidays as well as Monday to Friday. Positions may include afternoons, days, sleepovers and awake nights. Employees may work 8-44 hours per week as per their availability.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Supporting individuals to enrich their own quality of life in a manner that is most empowering and least restrictive
  • Providing health supports and monitoring including administration of medications
  • Providing individuals with counselling and behavioural supports
  • Assisting individuals in daily living skills (i.e. menu planning, meal preparation, budgeting skills, personal hygiene, etc.)
  • Creating opportunities that will assist individuals to develop and maintain meaningful relationships
  • Providing supports re. recreation, leisure, volunteerism and employment.
  • Respecting the worth, rights, privileges and privacy of each individual
  • Ensuring a safe and healthy environment for both staff and individuals in their home and in the community

Qualifications and Skills

  • Some work or other experience in the field of developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Developmental Support Worker diploma OR training (ie. students); or
  • A related university degree or college diploma (Bachelor’s, CYW, SSW, nursing) is preferred
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and to problem solve
  • Current vulnerable sector check
  • Crisis Prevention, First Aid/CPR and/or a willingness to participate in further training
  • Ability to speak French, Arabic or American Sign Language may be an asset

About the Agency: Forward House provides support to adults with an Intellectual Disability to live in their own homes, work and participate in their communities. We are an organization dedicated to providing individualized supports to people through supporting independence, enhancing participation and involvement, community engagement and advocacy.


Responsibilities and Duties

  • Demonstrate an ability to apply leadership and managerial principles in an ever-changing environment, including: effective delegation, conflict resolution, crisis management and employee
  • engagement and motivation.
  • Ability to lead people and change
  • Accountability to the organization’s Principles of Service, Mission, Policies and Procedures, and any MCCSS directives/Compliance/QAM and the Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act
  • Demonstrate independence in decision making
  • Work with and manage direct support professionals and ensuring all aspects of support meet the Mission, Principles of Service, Policies and Procedures, MCCSS directives/Compliance/QAM
  • Ability to communicate clearly, with all team members and community partners
  • Some experience in using digital forms of communication, documentation
  • Flexibility in hours of work
  • Participation in on call duties on a regular rotational basis

Qualifications:

D.S.W. or equivalent or a B.A. with knowledge of the sector. Minimum of one year of supervisory experience. Some experience working with individuals who have intellectual disabilities, dual diagnosis and physical disabilities.

The individual should have computer literacy and flexibility when it comes to locations, along with experience in a unionized environment.
Valid Drivers License and vehicle is required for this position.
